An 800 Baht Frame Versus 3,500: Is There a Real Difference
June 18, 2026 · 6 min read

I have heard this question almost every day for 30 years, and I understand the doubt. At the moment of buying, an 800 baht frame and a 2,500 baht frame can look almost the same. They both have gold, similar sizes, and seem to do the same job.
But the real difference is not what the eye sees on day one. It is what happens inside over the next two or three years.
The difference you cannot see is the one that matters

Mat burn is the clearest example. A backing board with acid slowly eats the paper of your picture, leaving permanent brown stains at the edges. Conservation grade board made from cotton rag or alpha cellulose is slightly alkaline at 2 to 3 percent, so it not only stays acid free but absorbs acid from the surrounding air.
Glass is the same story. Ordinary glass blocks 45 percent of UV, conservation glass blocks 99 percent. Yet UV causes only 40 percent of fading. The other 60 percent comes from visible light, heat and humidity, so protecting a picture means looking at the whole build.
Cost per year, made clear
An 800 baht frame that lasts 3 years costs about 267 baht per year. A 2,800 baht frame that lasts 20 years costs only 140 baht per year, and it protects the irreplaceable picture inside.
A plain comparison
| Property | Basic 650 to 1,200 THB | Mid 1,500 to 2,800 THB | Premium 3,500 THB and up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame | Faux wood, plastic | Real wood or quality resin | Real or carved wood |
| Glass | Ordinary, 45% UV | 99% UV | Museum grade, under 1% reflection |
| Mat board | Ordinary paper | Conservation grade | Multi layer conservation |
| Lifespan | 2 to 5 years | 10 to 25 years | 20 to 50 years |
| Cost per year | Higher than it looks | Moderate | Lowest long term |
When to spend and when not to

Cheap frames suit temporary posters, seasonal decor and photos you change often. For diplomas, wedding photos, irreplaceable family pictures and sacred items, invest in better materials. The gap may be 1,700 baht, but it can keep a picture bright for another 20 years.
